Rest EverCool Cooling Comforter review: This blanket is here to save hot sleepers

Historically, hot sleepers have had two choices come summer months: Crank up the air conditioning full-blast or sweat it out in bed. While the first option is more comfortable, it’s going to cost you more in utility bills — and it may not feel ideal for any non-hot sleepers next to you. Things get even more challenging if you deal with health conditions like hyperthyroidism or diabetes, or hormonal changes due to menopause, which can cause you to swelter regardless of the season. Enter the Rest EverCool Cooling Comforter.

I tested this blanket, which has taken the bedding world by storm, as part of our guide to the best comforters. It has a long list of accolades and awards and has managed to impress everyone from sleep experts like Dr. Whitney Roban to celebrities (Drew Barrymore is one of the brand ambassadors). As one of Yahoo’s resident bedding and bath experts, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on (or more accurately, my entire hot-blooded body under) this thing. Was it really as effective as everyone was saying? Was it the answer to sweaty, interrupted nights and more comfortable summer cuddling?

I’ll come right out and say that I didn’t end up choosing the Rest EverCool comforter as my favorite cooling option — mostly because it feels more like a blanket than a comforter — but I was seriously impressed by it. Here’s my Rest EverCool Cooling Comforter review.

Rest

Fans praise this comforter’s temperature-regulating capabilities (the fill is made of Tencel and Sorona, known for their breathability). I found it silky-soft — and pleasingly cool! — to the touch. Bonus: It’s machine-washable for easy maintenance and, as confirmed by my testing, the look and feel hold up over time.

Pros

  • Cool to the touch
  • Breathable
  • Lightweight
  • Moisture wicking
  • Comes in six colors
Cons

  • On the pricey side
  • Not as cushy or lofty as a traditional comforter

What I liked: It’s cozy yet cooling!

The first thing I noticed upon removing the Rest EverCool Cooling Comforter from its packaging was just how soft, smooth and refreshing it feels. My hands glided over the outer shell, made of a proprietary fabric, like they would over silk, and I experienced an instant surge of coolness. I also like the blanket’s design: It has a wave-stitch pattern throughout that keeps everything in place and would work with pretty much any bedroom aesthetic. It comes in six colors, including some that are reversible (with lighter shades on the other side), so you get two looks in one.

The Rest brand and many of its fans hail the comforter’s moisture-wicking capabilities, so I decided to throw some water at them. More specifically, I used a dropper to distribute water as part of a “spill test”: The water began to spread instantly, backing up the moisture-wicking claim, and dried quickly.

Because the comforter is machine-washable, I also decided to take it for a spin: It fit in my compact machine with no problem and, after washing and tumble-drying, looked and felt just as good as when it went in.

Unlike most of the work I do at Yahoo, a good portion of this testing was conducted while I was unconscious (talk about a dream job!). I slept under the Rest EverCool Cooling Comforter for a full week — in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the summer heat — and didn’t have to turn on a fan or run the air conditioning.

What I would change: I’d take a little more cushioning

If I had to alter one thing about the EverCool, it would be to add a bit of cushioning. As I mentioned in our story on the best comforters, the weight and plushness (or lack thereof) reminds me more of a blanket or quilt than what I’d expect from a traditional comforter. Or, maybe Rest should just change the name, as I’m aware that adding additional filling could compromise the blanket’s cooling abilities.

At a starting price of $200 ($229 for a full/queen), this comforter will also set you back a pretty penny. Though, it comes with free shipping and is often on sale for 20% off or more on Rest’s site, with additional discounts if you sign up for emails.

The verdict: Rest’s EverCool Comforter is a hot sleeper’s dream come true

The Rest EverCool Cooling Comforter is one of the coolest comforters I’ve tried – a godsend for hot sleepers, cuddlers and anyone suffering from hot flashes or night sweats due to health conditions, hormonal changes and beyond.

Although it wasn’t lofty and springy like my favorite cooling comforter, the Buffy Cloud Comforter, the EverCool feels incredibly refreshing: Wrapping yourself up in one is like stepping into a pool on a hot day. Sure, it’s pricey, but if you consider we spend a third of our lives in bed and you can manage it — as a luxury for yourself or a gift for someone else — I’d consider it a worthy investment. Plus, it comes with a 30-day return guarantee and a one-year warranty, so you can always try it first before committing.
