An investigation is underway after a number of birds were found dead after becoming trapped in bird-deterrent gel at a shopping centre car park.
The wild birds were found at The Village Upper Mt Gravatt shopping centre in Brisbane’s south on Monday after becoming trapped in the substance applied to overhead pipes to stop swallows from nesting in the multi-storey car park.

“We are saddened by the loss of a number of birds at the centre and take the welfare of local wildlife seriously,” centre manager Kelly Clough said.
“As soon as we became aware of the issue, we commenced the process to remove the bird deterrent gel from the affected area.
“We are working closely with the RSPCA and are conducting our own investigation into the matter.”
The commercially available bird-deterrent gel had been installed after other measures, including netting and spikes, proved ineffective.
Bird droppings had also caused corrosion to fire service pipes and sprinkler systems. An RSPCA Queensland spokesperson confirmed the matter is under investigation.
“As this is an active investigation, we are unable to provide any further details at this time,” the spokesperson said.
